Circa is back with a brand new show! Wolf, Yaron Lifschitz’s creation combines innovative choreography, precise acrobatics, martial arts and some signature moments of fun. Wolf has at its core a central theme of the wild spirit of the indomitable wolf. Vancouver dance enthusiasts may already be acquainted with Circa Ensemble’s unique circus vibe from their earlier shows at the Vancouver Playhouse. Duckpond – a spoof on Swan Lake and Sacre, that depicted opposing facets of “The Big Top.”

Ten performers: four women and six men unite as a single troupe on a black box stage, save for a seven foot high white partial wall that changes its hue according to Alex Berlage’s dramatic lighting. The show begins with a tall, slender woman going through her paces on an aerial trapeze, demonstrating incredible flexibility.

Libby McDonnell’s eye-catching two-tone designer leotards are functional and fit the theme. However, Ori Lichtik’s repetitive electro-club sound that follows the performance throughout the entire show gets to be monotonous by the end of eighty-minutes, I found myself actually using the noise-protection provided by the house staff.

As is typical for Circa, the show is nearer to contemporary dance than to conventional circus with the emphasis on strength and balance. It’s certainly a show with plenty of attitude; a kaleidoscope of dynamic body sculptures, involving two, three, four or even the entire team.

Circa’s Wolf offers a unique opportunity for Vancouver audiences to experience breathtaking athleticism when it’s applied to sublime movement.
