Tango has quite the hold on Vancouverites. The Vancouver tango community started in the 1990’s with just a few enthusiasts and over the years has grown to the point where milongas (tango dance parties) are held every night of the week. The Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre offers the ‘magic of Argentine tango’ as a hobby to enrich your sense of community and love of dance. Agustina Videla, the choreographer of Social Tango Project wants to create the experience of a milonga for her audience at the Playhouse. She wants to bring the energy and feeling of community that tango offers into the Playhouse. The feeling of community and the joy of dance was very palpable on opening night. The dancers, Lucia Ohyama, Lucia Aspiroz Larrosa, Emmanuel Casal, Lily Chenlo, Cinthia Diaz, Carla Dominguez, Bruno Mayo, Yanina Muzyka, Jesus Taborda and Roberto Zuccarino exuded an atmosphere of excitement in their love of tango. As Agustina Videla spoke of in the pre-talk before the performance, social tango is about community. It is about joining others in the love of dance and in that joining a family is found where one feels at home. Infusing the program was the rich sound of tango music created by a double bass, a violin, a piano and a bandoneon. The bandoneon is a type of concertina which is prevalent in Argentina. It has a darker and more solemn tone than the accordion and therefore is well suited to the emotions the tango dance brings forth. The addition of black and white film depicting street scenes of people and places in Buenos Aires as a backdrop to the scenes on stage was a brilliant way to illustrate how important the connection of people to dance is. Nora Lezano’s photography was a powerful addition to the overall effect Social Tango Project had on the audience. Ariel Varnerin’s rich voice added another layer of enjoyment to the evening. DanceHouse opened its 2024/25 season with Social Dance Project foreshadowing another great season of international dance. © 2024 Nancie Ottem |
