The Pride was out in full force at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for opening night of The Lion King. And they were fantastic. My parents were born in Nairobi, Kenya and I recall my mother taking me to the Disney animated original film at the Paramount Theatre in Chilliwack over 25 years ago. Fluent in Swahili, she translated the opening song for the theatre who were never exposed to Swahili and many, the African culture. Recently celebrating my mother’s passing of 12 years, I genuinely felt a true “full circle” of life rewatching it performed live on stage. The singing was excellent, from Rafiki who belted out the tunes to Nala who has a powerhouse voice. As many of us grew up with The Lion King, it was so enjoyable to be able to sing along the verses in your head as they are so well known. The costume design was impeccable. The giraffes were grazing the stage of the Queen E as though it was lawn, balanced in the air by the performers who were on stilts. The oversized elephants came trumpeting down the aisles to meet the rest of the animals on stage. This was truly spectacular for audiences of all ages, whether you are a child watching it with awe or an adult wishing you would have enough banked vacation at work to go on a Safari in Africa! Without giving too much away for those who will go see it, I did enjoy the plot as it followed very closely to the original film which brought back nostalgia for many while also adding in a few fresh and exciting jokes. In our current world filled with uncertainty such as tariffs, increasing interest rates, wars overseas and conflicts with neighbouring countries, I feel there is no better time than now to watch this production whose message is “Hakuna Matata”. As we all know, it means “no worries for the rest of your days!” I
strongly recommend going as you won’t be
disappointed. ©
