I recently attended Les jolies choses (The Pretty Things) by Montreal's Compagnie Catherine Gaudet, and it left a deep impression on me. Watching the five dancers was mesmerizing—their movements were perfectly coordinated to the steady, metronomic beat of Antoine Berthiaume's music. It felt mechanical, almost like watching a machine in motion. At first, the repetitive and robotic movements made me think about how we often move through life on autopilot. But then, unexpectedly, the dancers would break into sudden outbursts—brief moments of raw energy and emotion bursting through the routine. These flashes were refreshing reminders of our humanness beneath the surface of our daily patterns. The performance kept me thinking about how automatic our lives can become and how important it is to recognize and embrace those spontaneous moments that make us feel truly alive. Those outbursts were like windows into something deeper, challenging the contained way we often live. I left the theater feeling both moved and contemplative. The experience was a powerful reminder to be more present and to appreciate the sparks that break through our routines. It was thought-provoking and resonated with me on a personal level—a performance that is stay with me for a long time. © 2024 Shakeela Begum |
