Performer Geumhyung Jeong

Reviewer John Jane

Performance artist, fitness guru and postulant sex therapist Geumhyung Jeong presents a quirky piece of performance art without actually performing.

For almost the entire sixty minutes Jeong sits at a table with her laptop presenting the show’s narrative in her own Korean language with little display of emotion. It was around the forty-minute mark before she rose from her chair to perform a four-minute feigned masturbation with a scale model of a hydraulic earth mover.

Jeong’s show is essentially comprised of a selection of videos complete with English subtitles flashed across a large screen at centre stage. The linear narrative is mainly anecdotal with Jeong herself as a hermaphrodite. When her carnal satisfaction with anterior partners wanes she turns to a DoosanTM heavy-duty excavator. Oddly, the audience for the most part, appeared to find this amusing rather than just plain weird.

The show is ridiculously erotic and certainly Jeong’s storytelling is mildly entertaining. But if I had just wanted to watch YouTube videos I could have stayed at home.
