Jessie Awards Night 2007

Date 18 June 2007 @ 8pm Venue The Commodore Ball Room

On Monday evening the Commodore was jam packed with every known species of theatre persona. As usual at these prestigious occasions, the entertainment provided by the Jessie Awards committee was brilliant.

The live stage shows were also projected on large screens on either side if the stage, so that all the audience could enjoy the talent on display. The presenters were witty and short in their introductions to the chosen nominees and announced the winners promptly. All the award and prize winners were enthusiastically applauded by the large and exuberant audience of friends and colleagues.

Homage, as always, was paid to the courageous and far seeing early members of Vancouver’s theatre scene. It was joy to see film clips of Jessie Richardson herself and other veteran members of those pioneering companies who are still with us. A number of memorial awards were presented to outstanding current members of the performing arts scene.

What a wealth of theatrical talent Vancouver has. Just reading the list of nominees for the coveted statues is a tribute to the strength of the arts community, when one considers how few among the many are nominated and how few of these are chosen. Only the tip of the iceberg of the skill and talent of this city is shown at this wonderful evening of tribute to Vancouver theatre.

Many, many thanks to the generous sponsors of this stellar event.
