VIFF executive director Jacqueline Dupuis welcomed attendees, mostly consisting of media and film-makers, to the festival’s press conference. Programming directors provided expansive overviews and a few sneak previews representing numerous film series on hand at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival. It officially commences on September 26 with the opening gala screening of Atom Egoyan’s film Guest of Honour, starring David Thewlis as a Toronto city restaurant inspector. The festival ends with a final gala presentation of Nicolas Bedos' La Belle Époque, an original romantic comedy with French dialogue and English subtitles.

There is an excellent selection of Canadian films, including Daughter which was shot right here in Vancouver and starring local actor John Cassini. Asian films have not been overlooked. Among the many interesting films featured is Hong Kong filmmaker Yonfan’s No.7 Cherry Lane.

Also in attendance, Dr. Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, on behalf of the Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, to announce infrastructure funding of 1.3 million dollars towards the upgrade of the Vancouver International Film Centre Atrium.
