Ice Blue

Canada 2017. Dir: Sandi Somers. 104 mins. Opens May 11, 2018 in Vancouver (Landmark Cinemas, New Westminster)

Reviewer Ed Farolan

I have mixed feelings about this debut feature by this Calgary filmmaker. The film starts off simple, but then gets confusing as it continues on. It starts mixing the supernatural with the psychological, and this gets the viewer confused. I feel the film needs more focus. Is it psychological? Is it supernatural? In an email interview, I asked her these questions and her answers were somewhat vague, and as I was trying to decipher them, it felt like she was saying "it´s up to the viewer". In other words, we´re left to make our own decisions whether this is a psycho story, a crime story, a ghost story, etc.

I´m still old-fashioned and I don´t like to think when I watch a movie. I just like to enjoy it rather than have questions when the movie ends. This is her first feature film so perhaps Somers is still grappling at the ropes on what to do.
