Vancouver’s JC Dance Co (owners Joel and Clara Marasigan) showcased the glamour and skill of Ballroom and Latin dance in the March edition of The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! noon hour series. The company’s 45-minute show was performed by competitive ballroom dance students in a selection of classic dances including the Tango, the Asian Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Bollywood and Jive.

I enjoyed the ballroom tango by the professional dancing couple Joel and Clara Marasigan as well as their Asian Waltz which was a slower version of the European/Viennese waltz where the female dancer has long sleeves that she uses as a prop similar to traditional Chinese dances that use banners.

The tango was flawlessly danced by Joel and Clara. I asked Joel during the Q & A session the difference between Argentine and Ballroom tango, and he said that the distance in ballroom dancing between both dancers is farther away than the Argentine way where dancers are practically attached to each other. Also, the head movements are more defined in ballroom dancing, he said.

This was indeed an educational as well as an entertaining noon hour. Check out the JC Dance Co website for more info on the company's upcoming shows.
