The evening started off with the New Breed Brass Band– to use their words “Music for and by New Orleans next generation”. They are a mix of Jazz, funk, the cities brass band tradition, R&B and hip hop. First time I have seen and heard a “Sousaphone” in a contemporary concert setting. The whole theatre was well lit, atmospheric smoke and excellent lighting made it a very comfortable, intimate music environment, plus the acoustics were great. The Band’s style of combining parades, with modern rhythms, was quite unique, and a good introduction to the main event, plus it made me feel like I was walking down Bourbon Street at Mardi Gras. Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra took their seats and Mr. Marsalis introduced his group of musicians. A room full of talent! Twelve brass instrument players, stand up base, bass guitar, drums, piano. A variety of different music was played – an excellent tribute to the Count Basie Orchestra, “Dr. Hard Groove”, “Carnival Time” (a New Orleans Mardi Gras-themed R&B song that was performed by Al Johnson and recorded in 1960). “Basic blues”,“I’m Walkin”, the Fats Domino classic of 1957, and “Doing what we Gotta Do” an original song Marsalis wrote based on his father. I particularly liked the last solo Marsalis played, with his trombone, and a mute, plus pianist accompanying him.It was quire soft and soulful. DelfeayoMarsalis was entertaining, and his snippets of information re the songs, his family, the music, plus all of the solos performedby his band, made for a great New Orleans flavored evening. We ended up all singing along to “Li’l Liza Jane”, a song that dates back to the Antebellum South and a great ending for a New Orleans flavored evening. © 2025 Patricia Cassidy |
